A modern day alchemist, DJ Chela mixes movements, communities and evolutionary patterns together like records. From a prolific DJ career traveling the world and working with luminaries, to dedicated spiritual and healing studies, to a breadth of artistic projects, Chela weaves together lineages of expression to inspire her audiences and engage their spirits.
North Carolina-raised and now based in New York, Chela has been making her imprint in clubs, radio, mixtapes, live shows and battles for over 10 years. Her live sets are a dynamic mixture of world rhythms, Latin, Hip Hop, rock, reggae, funk, soul, disco, house and more mixed with a turntablist sensibility. In turntablism she earned the 2009 Winter Music Conference Spin Off battle runner-up, placed second in the 2007 She's My DJ Battle and recently won round one of Geko Jones's Just The Tip soundclash. Her mixtapes earned her three nominations for the Justo's Mixtape Awards. Chela has DJed for Saigon, Pharoahe Monch, KRS ONE, Immortal Technique, Mystic, Talib Kweli, Rah Digga and Ladybug Mecca, and has been featured in The Source, Allhiphop.com, Scratch Magazine, Foundation Magazine and on MTV.com. She has shared her gifts of moving Spirit through music, delighting audiences across Latin America, Asia, Africa, Canada and the US.
Chela has broadcasted shows for five years on WOBC, WXDU and www.dabeatminerz.com, and was named Top 10 College DJs from Urban Network Magazine. She was a stand in for Chuck D's Air America show and is often featured as a guest DJ on NYC's Pacifica station, WBAI. In her homebase of NYC she has rocked the largest venues: BB Kings, S.O.B's, The Canal Room, Le Poisson Rouge, Brooklyn Bowl, and more alongside Tony Touch, Afrika Bambaataa, DJ Enuff and many others.
Chela, a Sanskrit word meaning the "disciple of a guru", sees her work as an opportunity to surrender to Spirit and be a creative vessel for transformation and healing. She is also a singer/songwriter, Tom Kenyon-trained Sound Healer, Reiki Master Teacher, doula and Brennan Healing Science Practitioner. She brings all of this to the (turn)table--every show, every venue.
A born and raised Durham native, he went to school at Hillside High School to study the arts and music, With his love for music and writing. His original presents started in the poetry scene but he had soon changed his mind and returned his love for music, even also blended the two together with his spoken word album efforts “Chikirin” and “Oasis” during that time Ves landed a nominee slot at National Poetry Awards for “Album of the Year” and “Single of the Year”. Afterwards Vespertine took a hiatus for search for a new sound, production wise, which would develop a dynamic release “StrangeBoi EP”. Vespertine also landed production credits on Spike Lee’s Joint “Da Sweet Blood of Jesus” soundtrack and also received honorable mentions from Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. Vespertine also have been trekking locally around Durham in the DJ scene.
PlayPlay creatively interweaves nostalgic hip-hop and house classics into both their DJ sets and music production, which are largely composed of sounds reminiscent of what they grew up listening to: jungle/early hardcore/breakbeat, anything Goldie, acid house, ghettotech, jock jams, EBM, industrial and 90s everything. PlayPlay particularly embraces the intersection between jungle and Chicago footwork, & is forever obsessed with Bmore club. Their ultimate goal is to be in constant musical conversation with the crowd, kicking up nostalgia & connecting through sounds and sweat.
